Tomato (Celebrity) is a disease-resistant determinate hybrid that revolutionized home vegetable gardening when it debuted in 1984. It produces medium-sized, round fruits averaging 7–8 ounces with a classic tomato flavor that balances sweetness with just enough acidity. The plants grow to about 4 feet tall — compact enough for a cage but productive enough to feed a family, typically yielding 20–30 pounds per plant over its determinate season. Celebrity carries the VFFNTA disease-resistance code, meaning it shrugs off verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, nematodes, tobacco mosaic virus, and alternaria — making it one of the most forgiving tomatoes you can plant.
Start Celebrity indoors 6–8 weeks before your last frost date, transplanting outdoors once soil temperatures reach 60°F or above. Plant deep — bury 2/3 of the stem to develop a stronger root system. Install a sturdy cage or stake at planting time, before the roots establish, to avoid damage later. Water deeply 1–2 inches per week at the base, keeping foliage dry to minimize disease. Apply 2–3 inches of straw or wood chip mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. As a determinate variety, Celebrity does not need heavy suckering — allow the natural bush form. Feed with a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus and potassium fertilizer once flowers begin to set. Watch for early blight (lower leaf yellowing) and remove affected leaves promptly. Harvest when fruit is fully red and gives slightly to pressure — usually 70–75 days after transplant.
