Raspberry Bush (Heritage) is the most widely grown everbearing red raspberry variety in North America — a fall-bearing cultivar that produces two crops annually: a small summer crop on two-year-old canes in July, and a heavy fall crop on first-year canes from August through frost. Hardy in zones 3–8, Heritage is valued for its outstanding vigor, disease resistance, and exceptional flavor — large, firm, bright-red berries with a classic rich raspberry flavor superior to most commercial varieties. As a fall-bearing type, Heritage is also exceptionally easy to manage: simply mow all canes to the ground each late winter for a single, concentrated fall harvest with no disease buildup on old canes.
Plant Heritage raspberry in full sun in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Space canes 24 inches apart in rows 8–10 feet apart. Support with a simple two-wire trellis. For the simplest management, use the 'cut-all-down' method: mow all canes to the ground in late winter (February–March), then allow all new canes to grow for a concentrated fall harvest. Water consistently — Heritage needs 1–2 inches per week during fruiting. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer plus a nitrogen top-dressing in late May. Pick berries every 2–3 days during the harvest window. Heritage is resistant to most raspberry diseases but apply lime sulfur during dormancy in areas where cane diseases are common. Plant in a new location every 8–10 years to prevent soil-borne disease buildup.
