Pomegranate (Wonderful) is the world's most commercially important pomegranate cultivar and a superb choice for home gardeners in warm climates. It produces large, brilliant red fruits with a hard, leathery rind packed with glistening ruby-red arils — the juicy seed sacs that burst with a complex sweet-tart flavor exceptionally high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and polyphenols. Wonderful grows as a drought-tolerant, long-lived deciduous shrub or small tree (8–12 feet) in zones 8–10, thriving in hot, dry summers and tolerating alkaline soils. It's self-fruitful and produces fruit in fall (September–November). The spectacular scarlet-orange flowers in spring are ornamentally striking, and a single mature plant yields 30–50 lbs of fruit annually.
Plant Wonderful pomegranate in full sun in any well-drained soil — it tolerates poor, shallow, rocky, and alkaline soils better than almost any other fruit plant. Space plants 15–20 feet apart or prune as an 8–10 foot multi-stem shrub. In zones 7–8, plant against a south-facing wall and protect with frost cloth during hard freezes. Water deeply but infrequently once established; reduce irrigation in fall to allow proper fruit maturation and rind hardening. Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Prune in late winter to remove suckers, dead wood, and crossing branches. Fruits ripen in fall when they deepen in color and the skin becomes leathery — harvest by cutting with pruners. Do not let split fruits hang on the tree as they attract pests. Store whole fruits at room temperature for 2 weeks, refrigerated for 3 months.
