Pomegranate Tree (Wonderful) is the industry-leading pomegranate cultivar and the variety behind virtually all commercial pomegranate products in North America. It produces large, deep-crimson fruits with hard rind and ruby-red arils (seed sacs) packed with intensely tart-sweet juice that's extraordinarily high in antioxidants. Growing 10–15 feet tall in zones 7–10, Wonderful pomegranate is drought-tolerant, heat-loving, and remarkably long-lived — trees can produce for 200+ years. It thrives in dry summer climates similar to its native Middle East, making it ideal for California, Arizona, and Texas gardens. The spectacular orange-red flowers are ornamentally striking months before the fruit ripens in fall.
Plant Wonderful pomegranate in full sun in any well-drained soil — sandy loam is ideal. It's extremely tolerant of poor, alkaline, and dry soils once established. Space trees 15–20 feet apart or prune as a multi-stem shrub 8–10 feet. Water deeply but infrequently once established; overwatering reduces fruit quality. Fertilize lightly in spring — pomegranates need very little nitrogen. Prune in late winter to remove suckers at the base and any crossing or dead branches. Fruits ripen in fall (September–November) and should be harvested before they split open. Store whole fruits at room temperature for weeks, or refrigerate for up to 3 months. In zones 7–8, protect young trees from hard freezes with frost cloth.
