Olive Tree (Arbequina) is the most popular home garden olive variety — a compact, cold-tolerant Spanish cultivar that produces small, rich, nutty-flavored olives ideal for oil production and table use. Growing 10–15 feet tall in zones 8–10, Arbequina is more cold-hardy than most olive varieties (surviving brief dips to 15°F) and can be grown in large containers in colder climates, bringing it indoors for winter. It's self-fruitful, producing abundant crops without a pollinator, and begins bearing fruit in as few as 3–4 years — faster than most olive cultivars. The silvery-green, willowy foliage is ornamentally elegant, making Arbequina a beautiful landscape tree even when not in fruit.
Plant Arbequina in full sun in well-drained soil — heavy clay or waterlogged conditions are fatal. In zones below 8, grow in a large container (25-gallon minimum) using free-draining mix. Water deeply but infrequently once established; olive trees are highly drought-tolerant but benefit from irrigation during fruit development. Fertilize lightly in spring with a low-nitrogen fertilizer — high-nitrogen feeds promote leafy growth over fruiting. Prune in late spring after flowering to open the canopy for light penetration and air circulation. Container trees should be brought inside before temperatures drop to 28°F; protect in-ground trees with frost cloth during cold snaps in zones 7–8. Expect first fruit production in year 3–4. Fruit ripens from green to purple-black in fall; harvest to taste for preferred bitterness level.
