Snapdragon (Potomac) is a tall, heat-tolerant cut-flower snapdragon series producing sturdy 36-inch stems topped with tightly packed, fragrant flower spikes in a full range of colors including red, pink, orange, yellow, lavender, white, and bicolor. Grown as a cool-season annual in zones 3–10, Potomac snapdragons are prized by florists and home gardeners for their exceptional vase life and formal, elegant flower form. Unlike dwarf bedding snapdragons, Potomac's extra-long stems make them ideal as a primary cut flower. They bloom in late spring from early-started transplants, and in mild climates (zones 8–10) can be grown as fall-through-spring annuals, blooming through winter before summer heat ends the season.
Start Potomac snapdragon seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost. Snapdragons need cool temperatures (55–65°F) for germination; do not cover seeds — they need light to germinate. Transplant outdoors 2–3 weeks before last frost; snapdragons are semi-hardy and tolerate light frosts. Plant in full sun in rich, well-drained soil, spacing 9–12 inches apart. Pinch out the central growing tip at 4–6 inches to encourage multiple side shoots and more flower stems per plant. Stake tall-growing Potomac stems with bamboo canes once 18+ inches tall. Water at the base; wet foliage promotes botrytis. Fertilize every 3 weeks. Cut stems just as the lowest buds begin to show color for longest vase life. Deadhead or cut regularly to extend the flowering season.
