Rose (Hybrid Tea) is the classic florist's rose — tall, upright plants producing one exquisitely formed, high-centered bloom per long stem in virtually every color imaginable. The quintessential cut flower, Hybrid Tea roses grow 3–6 feet tall in zones 5–9 (or zones 4 with winter protection) and bloom repeatedly from late spring through hard frost when properly maintained. While they require more care than shrub roses — regular feeding, disease monitoring, and deadheading — the reward is spectacular: showstopper blooms with long stems perfect for arrangements and incomparable fragrance in many varieties. Modern disease-resistant Hybrid Tea selections have significantly reduced the maintenance burden compared to older cultivars.
Plant Hybrid Tea roses in full sun (minimum 6 hours) in rich, well-drained soil (pH 6.0–6.5). Space plants 3–4 feet apart for good air circulation. Water deeply at the base (drip or soaker hose) — overhead watering promotes fungal diseases like black spot and powdery mildew. Fertilize with a rose-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks from first leaf to 6 weeks before first frost. Prune in early spring, removing all dead wood and cutting healthy canes back to 12–18 inches, each cut above an outward-facing bud. Deadhead spent blooms throughout the season by cutting to the first 5-leaflet leaf for continuous reblooming. Apply preventative fungicide every 7–14 days in humid climates. In zones 4–5, mound soil or mulch over the bud union after hard frost for winter protection.
