Pansy (Jolly Joker) is one of the most eye-catching pansy cultivars, producing vivid bicolor flowers with deep purple upper petals and bright orange lower petals — a dramatic color combination that won it the All-America Selections award. Growing 6–9 inches tall in zones 4–8, Jolly Joker pansies bloom in cool weather from fall through spring in mild climates, or from early spring through early summer in cold climates. They're among the most cold-tolerant annuals available, tolerating temperatures down to 20°F without damage, making them ideal for early spring containers and winter window boxes in zones 7–9. The cheerful, face-like blooms are also edible — beautiful for garnishing salads, cakes, and cocktails.
Start Jolly Joker pansies indoors 10–14 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Pansy seeds germinate best at 65–70°F in the dark — cover trays with black plastic until sprouts appear. Transplant outdoors as soon as soil can be worked in spring; pansies withstand frost to 20°F. Plant in moist, rich, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; they bloom longer with afternoon shade in warm climates. Water consistently; don't let soil dry out. Fertilize every 2–3 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer for non-stop blooming. Deadhead faded flowers regularly. In zones 7–9, plant in fall for a winter-and-spring display. Pull and compost once summer heat causes decline; replace with heat-tolerant summer annuals.
