Fig Tree (Brown Turkey) is the most widely adapted fig cultivar for home gardens, producing two crops annually — a small breba crop in early summer and a larger main crop in late summer through fall. The medium-to-large pear-shaped fruits have purplish-brown skin and sweet, copper-pink flesh with a rich honey flavor. Brown Turkey is cold-hardier than most figs, surviving to zone 6 with root protection, and thrives as a large shrub or small tree (8–15 feet) in zones 7–10. Self-fruitful and easy to grow, it's productive even in containers on patios in colder climates. The fruit resists splitting better than many varieties and holds well on the tree for sequential harvesting.
Plant Brown Turkey fig in the warmest microclimate available — south-facing wall, urban heat zone, or protected courtyard. In zones 6–7, plant against a south-facing masonry wall and mulch roots heavily to protect from freeze damage. Figs thrive in any well-drained soil of moderate fertility; over-fertilizing produces lush leafy growth at the expense of fruit. Water deeply during fruit development; inconsistent moisture causes fruit drop and splitting. Little pruning is needed — remove dead wood in spring and thin crossing branches. In containers, repot every 2 years and feed with a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertilizer from late spring. Breba (first) crop forms on prior year's wood; avoid heavy winter pruning to preserve it.
