Daylily (Stella de Oro) is arguably the most popular garden perennial in North America — a compact, reblooming daylily that produces cheerful golden-yellow trumpet flowers almost continuously from late spring through fall. Growing just 12–18 inches tall in zones 3–9, Stella de Oro fits any size garden, border edge, or container and is virtually indestructible once established. Each flower lasts only one day (hence 'daylily'), but Stella produces hundreds of buds per plant, ensuring non-stop color. It's drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and adapts to a wide range of soil types. An All-America Selections winner, Stella de Oro remains the benchmark for compact, long-blooming daylilies decades after its introduction.
Plant Stella de Oro in full sun (minimum 6 hours) in well-drained, fertile soil. Space plants 18 inches apart. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish; once established, Stella is remarkably drought-tolerant and largely self-sufficient. Deadhead individual spent flowers daily to maintain tidiness and encourage continuous rebloom — remove the entire flower scape once all buds on it have opened and faded. Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or late summer to maintain vigor and flowering; a single clump can grow to 2+ feet wide. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced fertilizer — over-fertilizing with nitrogen promotes lush leaves at the expense of flowers. Virtually pest and disease-free.
