Damson Plum (Merryweather) is a traditional British variety of the small, intensely flavored damsons that have grown in English hedgerows and kitchen gardens for centuries, the fruit being too astringent for fresh eating but transforming magnificently when cooked — yielding the deep-purple, intensely plum-flavored jams, jellies, gins, wines, and cheeses that make it one of the most-sought-after preserve fruits in British tradition. Merryweather is the largest-fruited damson variety and is slightly less astringent than the true Shropshire damson, making it the most approachable choice for home growers who want both culinary and fresh-eating potential. The trees are compact, self-fertile, and remarkably low-maintenance, tolerating exposed sites and heavier soils than most stone fruits, and producing abundantly in most years without spraying or special attention.
Plant Merryweather Damson in full sun to light partial shade with well-drained soil; it tolerates heavier clay soils better than most stone fruits but still requires adequate drainage to prevent crown rot. As a self-fertile variety, a single Merryweather tree will produce a full crop without a pollinator, though planting a second damson or compatible plum variety nearby will further increase yields. Train to an open-center (vase) form or as a fan against a wall in colder zones — fan-training against a south or west-facing wall extends the range into zones 5–6 where open-ground growing is marginal. Prune in summer rather than winter to minimize silver leaf disease infection through pruning cuts — remove crossing branches and any suckers from below the graft union. Thin the fruit crop in June if it is exceptionally heavy (clusters of 3–4 fruits should be thinned to 2) to prevent branches from breaking and to improve fruit size. Net trees in late summer as the fruit begins to color to protect from birds and wasps. Damsons are best harvested when completely ripe (early to mid-September for Merryweather), when they soften slightly and develop full flavor — slightly overripe fruit makes superior jam. The cooked flesh is intensely purple and fragrant, making extraordinary preserves, gin, and crumbles.
