Cosmos (Sensation Mix) is one of the most graceful and easy-to-grow annuals, producing ferny, delicate foliage topped with large, single daisy flowers in shades of crimson, pink, and white, swaying on 3–4 foot stems throughout summer and fall. Growing in zones 2–11 as a fast-maturing annual, cosmos thrives in poor, dry soils where richer-fertilized plants struggle — making it perfect for difficult spots and new garden beds. The Sensation Mix is selected for extra-large flowers (3–4 inches across) on long, wiry stems ideal for cutting. Cosmos is an exceptional pollinator plant — a constant source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. It self-seeds freely in zones 6+ to return each year without replanting.
Direct sow Sensation Mix cosmos after last frost directly in the garden — cosmos resents transplanting and germinates readily in warm soil. Sow 1/4 inch deep in thin rows or broadcast over the bed; thin to 12–18 inches apart. Plant in full sun in poor to average, well-drained soil — rich, amended soil produces large leafy plants with few flowers. Do not fertilize heavily. Water during establishment, then cosmos is very drought-tolerant. Pinch growing tips at 12 inches to encourage branching and more flower stems. Deadhead or cut regularly for continuous bloom; cosmos stops producing if seeds mature. Self-seeds freely — leave a few heads in fall for next year's plants. Excellent for cutting: harvest when blooms are half-open for longest vase life.
