Avocado Tree (Hass) is the world's most popular avocado cultivar — the pebbly, dark-skinned, creamy-fleshed variety behind virtually all commercial avocado products. Growing 15–30 feet in zones 9–11, Hass produces year-round in ideal conditions, with the main harvest from spring through early fall. The buttery, rich flesh has a nutty depth and high healthy-fat content that makes it unmatched for guacamole, toast, salads, and sushi. Hass is self-fruitful but produces significantly larger crops when cross-pollinated with a Type A avocado (like Fuerte or Bacon). A grafted Hass tree begins bearing in as few as 3–5 years — far sooner than seed-grown trees, which may take 7–15 years and often produce inferior fruit.
Plant Hass avocado in full sun in the warmest available microclimate — sheltered from frost and cold wind. Use fast-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–7.0); avocados are extremely sensitive to waterlogged conditions and will develop root rot rapidly in poorly drained soil. Raised beds or mounding the soil before planting dramatically improves drainage and tree health. Water deeply but infrequently once established — allow the top 6 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Fertilize with an avocado-specific citrus and avocado fertilizer every 2 months during the growing season. Mulch heavily around the base (keeping mulch away from the trunk) to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Protect from frost below 28°F with frost cloth or LED string lights; young trees are especially frost-sensitive. In containers (zones below 9), use a 25-gallon pot with exceptional drainage and bring indoors before temperatures reach 35°F.
